From Kitchen to Canopy: Closed-Loop Organic Composting and Soil Enrichment

Diverting 100% of food scraps from municipal landfills. How our microbial composting pits and vermiculture beds convert buffet peelings into rich black soil for mango trees.

The Tragedy of Landfill Food Waste

In standard commercial hotels, hundreds of kilograms of kitchen vegetable trimmings, fruit peels, and plate scrapings are bagged into plastic and sent to municipal landfills. Once buried under trash, organic waste decomposes anaerobically, emitting methane—a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

At Mango Mist Resorts, we view organic food scraps not as waste, but as vital biological nutrients that belong back in the soil that grew them.

The 3-Step Vermiculture and Composting Pipeline

Our dedicated on-site organic composting yard operates three synchronized processes:

  • ·Step 1: Source Segregation: Kitchen trimmings (melon rinds, vegetable peels, coffee grounds) are segregated at prep stations away from non-biodegradable packaging.
  • ·Step 2: Aerobic Microbial Pits: Scraps are layered with shredded dry mango leaves and aerobic microbial cultures in ventilated compost bays, reaching pasteurization temperatures of 60°C.
  • ·Step 3: African Nightcrawler Vermicompost: Pre-digested compost is fed into vermiculture beds where earthworms (Eudrilus eugeniae) convert it into nutrient-dense, odor-free worm castings.

Closing the Agricultural Loop

Every three months, dozens of bags of dark, earthy vermicompost are spread around the drip-lines of our Badami, Raspuri, and Mallika mango trees, enriching soil microbial life without a single bag of synthetic chemical fertilizer.
